Something Really Important
Something Really Important is the story of a little girl named Sharik, from Nairobi, Kenya on the continent of Africa. In this delightful children’s book, Sharik learns some important life lessons. One day at school, she learned about the types of things people need. She can’t wait to tell her grandmother what she learned about basic needs like food, water, clothing and shelter. After all, these are simple things people need to live a good life. But in talking with her grandmother, she learned about one more thing ... love. This children’s book encourages us to love and care for others in the world around us. Sharik learns this life lesson not only in school, but also, because of the loving bond she has with her grandmother.
Set in Nairobi, Kenya, the artwork in Something Really Important gives the reader a glimpse into the culture of the region and bold look of the African clothing—from the textiles used in the grandmother’s clothing to the warm tones in the uniform Sharik wears to school.
This children’s book is especially written for Kindergarten through 3rd grade and includes sheet music and lyrics to the song “All People, All Around the world”, written by Fran Ellis. The audio download comes with the book and includes the recorded music. The musicians are from the ‘Once and For All’ band from Seattle, WA. The guitarist is John Rammer and the vocalist Elle McSharry.

An Important Message
"I wish every child in the world could sit down with a loving adult and they would read this book together."
~ Cheryl Hopkins
"I decided to do what I rarely do and give a critique of a new book. My reason? This author gives children something really important in her book called Something Really Important!
This book has a great message and somehow its deep appeal to goodness is subtle. I was left with the feeling that I had shared in the experience of a special relationship - the kind where a child can trust they will be met with love. You think about the story and the characters when you put it down. It was that kind of magic!"

A Seven Year Old's Opinion
My daughter, Emma Lee, wanted to write this in her own words: "I am 7 years old. I got Gamma Jan's book as a gift. When I read it, it reminded me of my Grandma LaLa, because she always treats me good. I read this book to my mommy and grandma all the time. I even wrote a book report on it. This is my second book by Gamma Jan, I can't wait to read the next one."

"... a deceptively simple fable... it provides insights into the differences that strengthen us and the commonalities that bind us. Highly recommend!"

"I think children of all ages will love this book. I know I did, and so did my nephews!"
